Garrison Model Railway
Garrison Grounds, Glasgow St, Millport, KA28 0DJ
Garrison model rail club or GMRC was founded in December 2006 by members of the community with an interest in model railways.
The Club was started with a view to building model rail layouts that could be opened to the public all year round. The display is totally free entry, all we ask is that you make a small donation to help with the running costs of the club. Cumbrae Community Development Company solved the first problem of where by allowing us to use the cabins situated within the Garrison grounds. Membership is open to anyone and costs £15 per year. The club is funded solely by donations and the committee and members would like to thank all the organisations, businesses and individuals who have contributed to the club since we started either with money or materials and equipment. The display features three layouts one in ’00’ Gauge 1:72 scale and two in ‘N’ Gauge 1:144 scale.
Our first layout was opened for September weekend in 2007, It is a ‘00’ Gauge layout which measures 20 feet by 11 feet. This first layout is a representation of Cumbrae with many features and landmarks from the island being incorporated into the design. The layout has over 350 feet of track and currently has 16 trains, with a mixture of diesel and steam both goods and passenger. This layout features mainly Bachmann trains and a few Hornby it also has digital control which allows us to run several trains at the same time, making for a more visual display. The two smaller layouts feature ‘N’ gauge trains one layout is a representation of part of the west highland line, and the other is based on a section of Glasgow around Shields road and features the underground and mainline. Both layouts run a mixture of trains both passenger and goods.
