Geocaching on Cumbrae
Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. These devices can be smart phones (e.g. iPhones and Android phones with downloaded GPS apps), handheld hiking GPS receivers, or even car satnavs. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container or treasure) hidden at that location. There are over a dozen active caches all around Cumbrae.
WHAT DOES A GEOCACHE LOOK LIKE? Geocaches vary greatly in size and appearance and can often be disguised to blend in with their surroundings. You might find anything from large, clear plastic containers to film canisters to a fake rock with a secret compartment. Some can be very small (called ‘nanos’ – about the third of the size of a AAA battery, usually unscrewed to find the tiny paper log sheet inside), others are more like sandwich containers (complete with a pencil to sign the log and some ‘treasure’ to swap).
